The skies aren't pristine — there's glow from the cities on either side — but away from the worst of it you get a steady Bortle 4 sweep, with the giant dish as the most evocative foreground in British astronomy.

When to look up
Lowland Cheshire is prone to damp, hazy air; the crispest views come on a clear night behind a cold front. The Discovery Centre runs evening events — check opening times before travelling for a dark-sky session.

Drive 20–30 minutes east into the Peak District — the moors above Macclesfield (Tegg's Nose, the Cat & Fiddle road) reach Bortle 3 with open horizons.
