Best Beginner Telescopes (and How to Not Waste $200)
Aperture beats magnification, mounts matter more than you think, and the 'world's most powerful' boxes at the big-box store are a trap. Here's what actually works for a first telescope.
Ignore magnification. Chase aperture.
The number printed biggest on a beginner telescope box — "525x!" — is the one that matters least. Magnification is just eyepiece math; any scope can be pushed to silly powers, where you get a big, dim, blurry smudge. What actually decides what you can see is aperture: the diameter of the main lens or mirror. More aperture gathers more light, which means brighter, sharper views of fainter things. A solid first telescope has at least 70mm of aperture (refractor) or 114–130mm (reflector).
The mount is half the telescope
A wobbly mount ruins an otherwise good scope: every time you nudge it to track an object, the view shakes for several seconds. Beginners are happiest with either a simple, sturdy alt-azimuth mount (push it around like a camera tripod) or a computerized GoTo mount that slews to objects for you. Equatorial mounts are powerful but have a learning curve — skip them until you know you want astrophotography.
Three honest starting points
- Smallest budget: a good pair of astronomy binoculars. Genuinely the best first "telescope" for most people — grab-and-go, wide views of the Milky Way and star clusters, and useful forever even after you buy a scope.
- Best views per dollar: a 114–130mm reflector on a stable mount. More aperture than a similarly priced refractor; shows the Moon, planets and brighter deep-sky objects well.
- Easiest to actually use: a small computerized GoTo scope. You pay for the electronics rather than aperture, but it finds and tracks targets automatically — which is the difference between a scope that gets used and one that gathers dust.
What to skip
Avoid any telescope sold mainly on magnification, "department-store" scopes with plastic mounts, and tiny "travel" refractors under 60mm. They technically work, but the frustration they cause ends more beginner astronomy hobbies than light pollution ever will.
